Metadata in Retrospective Digitization – Creating Context, Ensuring Accessibility
Digitization is more than scanning images, films, or documents — it’s about making meaning, provenance, and structure digitally visible. Only through metadata do digital assets become discoverable and sustainably usable. In retrospective digitization, the capture and structuring of metadata are therefore key components of every long-term project.
We help institutions develop metadata models, structure existing information, and enrich context data — manually, automatically, or in coordination with existing databases and authority data sources.
Our metadata services include:
- Capture of technical, descriptive, and structural metadata
(e.g., object description, provenance, format, condition, digitization process) - Development and application of standardized metadata formats
(e.g., LIDO, Dublin Core, IPTC, XMP) - Linking to authority data sources and vocabularies
(e.g., GND, Iconclass, AAT, Wikidata) - Conversion, mapping, and validation
(e.g., transforming existing data into structured, interoperable formats) - Integration into databases, repositories, and DAM systems
(e.g., MuseumPlus, NetX, fylr)
